After the immense popularity of Sound of Freedom stunned U.S. pundits, the biggest faith-based film in recent memory is coming to Australia.

Ranking in the top 10 in U.S. box office sales for 2023, the crowd-funded film has shockingly outperformed big-budget staples like Mission: Impossible and Indiana Jones. With a rare 100 per cent audience score on review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes, Sound of Freedom continues a recent trend of beloved box-office surprises like Jesus Revolution and The Chosen.

While the movie has generated significant criticism, statistics like its perfect audience score testify to exceptional film quality and compelling storytelling.

Based on the story of Homeland Security agent Tim Ballard (played by Jim Caveziel), the tone of the film is much closer to the gravity of Oppenheimer than the levity of Barbie, but with more hope and heroism than either.

When Ballard discovers a child sex-trafficking ring, he makes great sacrifices in his effort to take down these evil networks.

God seems to have big plans for the industry of faith-based films.

Sound of Freedom will finally feature in Australian cinemas, starting on 24 August. You won’t want to miss the biggest faith-based film of the year!

Angel Studios, the media service that produced Sound of Freedom, is also responsible for the largest crowd-funded TV series in history: The Chosen. The record-breaking series is available to stream on Netflix and for free online or in the new Chosen App.

In the early days of the series’ shocking success, director Dallas Jenkins told Eternity how he used to cringe at the idea of making Christian films, until God changed his mind and enabled The Chosen with some ‘impossible math’.

The Chosen, like Sound of Freedom, represents a transformation in faith-based films, reframing the potential for the quality and scale of Christian entertainment.

In fact, Jonathan Roumie, who plays Jesus in The Chosen, also plays Lonnie Frisbee in the box-office hit Jesus Revolution, the movie that sparked a powerful movement of God in Hollywood.

The day after its release, Eternity‘s Anne Lim spoke with director Jon Erwin, the record-setting architect behind I Can Only Imagine and American Underdog and the only director ever to receive an A+ rating for four different films on CinemaScore.

Erwin described the impact of Jesus Revolution in Hollywood, how the delay of the movie’s release fitted God’s perfect timing, the enduring relevance of the story and his determination to reinstate Lonnie Frisbee in the history of the Jesus Movement.

In short, the days of questionable production quality and amateurish acting are long gone. If the recent impact is anything to go by, God seems to have big plans for the industry of faith-based films.
