Australia’s Hillsong United new album, People, is making the group’s biggest splash yet.
The album, launched at the end of April, features the popular single Good Grace and debuted at No 1 on Billboard’s Top Album, which ranks the highest sales record, and No 2 on Billboard’s Top 200, which ranks the week’s most popular albums across all genres. It’s the highest Billboard 200 rank for Hillsong United.
The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the United States based on number of “units” encompassing traditional album sales and streaming.
Pop superstar Pink beat out Hillsong United for the top spot, but only just. Pink’s album Hurts 2B Human came in at 115,000 units, just 8000 more than Hillsong United.
In a statement put out by Hillsong United, the team said the album had generated more than eight million streams with more than 100,000 albums sold within its first week.
On April 22, the Hillsong United team played for Good Morning America, the most-watched morning television show in the United States, as part of the People album launch and kicking off a US tour. They performed Good Grace.
“We’re with one of the biggest Christian bands in the world … with an estimated 50 million people who sing their songs in church every Sunday,” said host Cecelia Vega.
Hillsong United albums Zion (2013) and Empires (2015) were previously the group’s highest-ranking accomplishments, coming in at No 5 on the Billboard 200.
