Becker, Liverpool’s goalkeeper, had just scored a dramatic header to earn his side a 2-1 win over West Bromwich Albion. In doing so, he earned his team three points that may prove invaluable in the club’s bid to qualify for the Champions League next season.

Becker, a Brazillian international, had headed up the field for a corner in the fifth minute of added time. There, unmarked, he scored an unexpected goal off his teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold’s cross.

The winning shot makes Becker the first goalkeeper to have scored a goal off a header in Premier League history. There have been just six other goalies who have scored with a kick, but none of the others have scored the winning goal.

After the match, an emotional Becker dedicated the win to his father who tragically drowned in February in Brazil.

“I’m too emotional, this last month for everything that has happened with me and my family, but football is my life, I played since I can remember with my father. I hope he was here to see it. I’m sure he is celebrating with God at his side,” he said.

In an interview with Brazilian paper Foha de S.Paulo in February this year, Becker talked about his Christian faith openly.

“You are evangelical, very religious, and Liverpool have players of varying beliefs. How do these different faiths interact on a daily basis?” the reporter asked him.

“I’ll correct it a little. I am not religious, I am a follower of Christ. When we talk about religiosity, it is very much tied to traditions and factors that somewhat tarnish the rich history of Christianity. Jesus is much more than religion,” was Becker’s passionate response.
